Simple Homemade Apple Cider

Crisp Morning Temperatures and Colorful Fall Leaves Brings About a Yearning for some Homemade Apple Cider!

apple-treeThe Fall season in the country, spark all the wonderful rural traditions we associate with that time of year include Hay Rides, Bon Fires, Pumpkin Carving to making Apple Butter and Homemade Apple Cider.  Some of us are lucky enough to live near an apple orchard which opens it’s gates to a fun filled “Pick Your Own” family outing date.  The next best thing is a visit to a local farmer’s market.

Which Type of Apples to Use

Some of us love the sweet cider and will want to use Red Delicious or Fuji apples.  Those who prefer the puck up tartness will go with the Granny Smith or the Macintosh.  A few of us have a creative streak and have fun mixing it up by combining various varieties of apples.  Have a mixture of red, green and gold apples to create the maximum flavor combination.

As you pick your apples for your cider, look for the healthiest apples you can find.  Avoid any apples that are bruised, scarred and battered.  While the recipe shown in the video below only uses 8 red delicious apples, keep in mind that it takes about 36 apples to make one gallon of apple cider.
