The Brighter Side of Burdock

No One is Spared From Attack of the Prickly, Sticky Burdock Burr Balls

Burdock Forelock

Count your blessings if you happen to live in one of the few areas the wild Burdock plant grows.  It is quite prolific with it’s large plant with dark green leaves, pretty rose colored flowers which are replaced with prickly burr balls which tend to attach to anything they touch.

If you are not so fortunate, you know how those little burr balls cling to your clothes if you brush against a plant or your dog comes in with the burrs tangled in his fur and most commonly your poor horse gets a new hairdo with a burr filled forelock, mane and tail.  How I hated the dreaded burr attacks.

There is a brighter side to the Burdock plant.  It has a number of wonderful uses you probably would never have guessed.

  • The Burrs were the inspiration for George de Mestra, the inventor of ‘Velcro’ .
  • Burdock was an ingredient in making beer before hops and a key ingredient in Dandelion and Burdock beer.
  • Burdock root is used in cooking
  • Burdock, a herb is a popular ingredient in Asian food
  • Burdock is also a soft drink ingredient in the UK https://www.planet-streamingnet/ https://www.planet-streamingnet/
